NEA-Jurupa is a proud partner in the Community Schools initiative, working alongside families, students, and community organizations to build schools that serve the whole child and strengthen Jurupa Valley.
Community Schools transform traditional school sites into hubs of support, opportunity, and connection. By integrating academic instruction with health services, family engagement, and community partnerships, Community Schools help every student thrive — and make our schools better places to work.
What Is a Community School?
A Community School is a public school that operates as a center of the community, open to students, families, and residents before, during, and after the school day. The model is built on four pillars: integrated student supports, expanded learning time and opportunities, active family and community engagement, and collaborative leadership and practices. Jurupa Unified School District has been expanding the Community Schools model with support from state funding and local partnerships.
The Four Pillars
Integrated Student Supports
On-site access to health, mental health, dental, and social services so students can focus on learning. Partnerships with local agencies bring resources directly to school campuses.
Expanded Learning Time
Before- and after-school programs, summer learning, enrichment activities, and extended instructional time that go beyond the traditional school day to deepen student engagement.
Family & Community Engagement
Meaningful partnerships with families and community organizations that give parents a voice in school decisions and connect schools to the broader Jurupa Valley community.
Collaborative Leadership
Shared decision-making among educators, administrators, families, and community partners. NEA-Jurupa members play a key role in shaping how Community Schools are implemented.
NEA-Jurupa's Role
Bargaining for Community Schools
NEA-Jurupa has worked to ensure that Community Schools implementation is addressed in our Collective Bargaining Agreement, protecting educator working conditions and ensuring teachers have a voice in program design.
Community Schools Council
Our Community Schools Council committee brings together educators, site reps, and union leaders to monitor implementation, share best practices, and advocate for resources at Community Schools sites.
Educator Voice
Teachers and support staff are essential partners in Community Schools — not just service recipients. NEA-Jurupa ensures that educator expertise shapes how programs are designed and delivered.
Advocacy for Funding
We advocate at the district, state, and national level for sustained Community Schools funding, including California's Community Schools Partnership Program (CSPP) grants.
Community Schools in Jurupa Valley
Jurupa Unified School District has designated multiple school sites as Community Schools under the California Community Schools Partnership Program. Each site has a Community School Coordinator who works with staff, families, and partners to coordinate services and programs.
